Annie, you know that I am biased, I am a big fan since Groov In Love #13 (will have to go back and listen to the older ones too). Again, this #14 shows how similar our taste is in music, I would have picked almost all of these tracks myself. In fact, I will probably jump on Beatport now and buy most...
Annie, you know that I am biased, I am a big fan since Groov In Love #13 (will have to go back and listen to the older ones too). Again, this #14 shows how similar our taste is in music, I would have picked almost all of these tracks myself. In fact, I will probably jump on Beatport now and buy most of these (too bad that you already used them in your set - I won't be able to include them now in my Mix.DJ releases just out of professional respect smile - unless I find some other remixes or versions)
I have a feeling that you were experimenting and trying out new things here. You start off with the perfect RnB sound that is so unique to your Groov in Love sets - but then you have Track3 with heavy latin influence. An awesome track that I would have definitely picked for my "Brazilian Funk Affair" set. It is still very soulful so it fits in nicely.
Andy Caldwell is Andy Caldwell, won't even mention it, it is always a gem to hear and everyone's favourite. You bring some more latin sound with Track 6 while you take it deeper, darker and harder throughout Tracks 5,6 and 7.
It is an interesting mood change, definitely moving away from the soulful sound - still pretty smooth and soft but in a different dimension. Track 6 is the only one where I felt it went a bit overboard for me, it does sound like a trance track or at least progressive house (we already had this discussion you remember). But then Track 7 brings it back, reminds me of the Gabriele Poso track I used in "Brazilian Funk Affair" for the exact same mood change to get it darker from a happy soulful mood.
Now I don't think it breaches the consistency of the mix (which both of us are so careful about). There are different concepts to make a mix, many parameters and dimensions. Whilst Groov In Love #13 was rock solid and consistent all the way through by using all great, positive RnB and soulful deep house vocal songs - this #14 here is more of a journey for me that starts shiny, goes a bit mellow and then dark, a tad electro - and then comes back! Throughout 8 to 11 it is a nice bridge to slowly come out from the harder sounding grooves to a more mellow, chilled out mood that then turns into cheerful happy RnB again. Even Nu Disco which is "Why Don't You Look Around" at Track 14, taking it to the very top (the synths remind me of a disco classic, Status IV's "You Ain't Really Down" and also a bit of Evelyn "Champagne" King). I could say that the guitar solo here at the end is a bit too much, it's almost a dance track now. But then again I also had a heavy funk guitar solo in "Late Nite Vibes One" with King Kooba and a pure dance track with Kloud 9 and Incognito. We all have our right reasons to use these tracks, and I can see how you justify it. I does fit into the arch and flow of the set to provide a contrast.
Track 15 nicely cools it down and closes the mix. Nice tough that it has the vocal reverbed and lingering at the end.
Mixing technique
You know that your track selection by itself amazes me, on top of that you have a very smooth and professional mixing technique. Now, I just learned that this was mixed live with CDJ1000s, no editing or software here. Well, even if you practiced it is an unbelievable performance to mix live with this precision and flow. Considering that you have only been doing this since 2008 it is a miracle, that makes you a rare talent.
I do mean this seriusly, I know professional club DJs who have been playing for over a decade and still cannot mix like you do. All hats off, keep up the good work!
