I find it amusing today the genre labels, adequate or not, that DJs, producers, remixers, and the like, assign to their House Music. Currently the trend seems to label many produced as "Electro" house. Whether or not that truly applies to today's house music labeled as such is probably up for debate. In my mind, genuine "Electro House" is a very sharp, powerful and heavy-slicing genre with an almost entirely electric sound. It's a label that doesn't really describe most of what's labeled as electro house these days--which tends to be more funk, tech, or progressive with a few electro elements, or not at all. Here on mix.dj, we must distill our sets into categories, labeling them in ways that don't necessarily describe the entire style.
When it comes down to it, that 4-to-the-floor, jack-2-it sound has its roots in one of two beat styles, "Deep" or "Garage"--the two originals. The first, "Deep, " originated here in Chicago in the black gay clubs on the south side in the early to mid-eighties, after the disco era, and the second, "Garage, " said to have originated at the Paradise Garage in New York around the same time. I won't get into what town invented house music first as that might start a fierce debate. (However, if you want to know where I stand on that subject, I think that would be obvious--Chicago is the home of House.) There is, of course, a 3rd style, "Progressive, " which made advances in layered instrumentation diversity, originated in the UK, and is most notably attributed to Paul Daley and Neil Barnes of Leftfield with groundbreaking tracks like "Open Up (Dervish Overture)." And, from here on, the style frenzy exploded.
In the end, everything is really pretty much just "Deep" or "Garage" and variations of the same, terms which refer to the nature of the beat itself. The styles that came later are "eye candy, " related to what is layered over the beat. Don't believe all those labels that you see these days.
In terms of my latest set, "Roots, " it is mostly Deep with a touch of Garage, if you believe me
