Time once again to select a set from the new “Said the Gramaphone” year-end collection (the whole list is here: http://www.saidthegramophone.com/archives/best_son... ) ... It's My Party: the 2016 version.
Those of you who’ve heard the Lux et Amor session have already had the pleasure of the Bon Iver track; pleasure enough, I’m betting, to not mind hearing it again. Beyond that, I was most moved by songs with a folkie vibe this time around: from the basic guitar/voice arrangement of Sarah Toussaint-Léveillé's French-language offering, or the sweet lazy sounds of Maggie Rogers, Whitney, & Georgia Ruth, to the layered, textured sweep of Drowzy, Snowblink, & Shearwater ... to my ear, these all represent the folk music ethic in some way. That doesn’t mean everything’s quiet & soft: hi-energy tunes from Sinead Harnett, Jenny Hval & Leanne Betasamosake Simpson will woke you.
And in these times, a special mention goes to Leonard Cohen's You Want It Darker.
Thx Alex -- here's hoping your day brightens up as it goes along ....

It was dark, so I tried for a little light; it was a bit gloomy, so I tried to make it a bit brighter; it was harsh and ugly, so I tried to smooth it and soothe it. I had help: Nils Frahm, Zero 7, Kush, Chris Brann, All India Radio, Chris Brann and a couple of tunes courtesy of the Said the Gramaphone Best of 2016 list from Bon Iver and Waclaw Zimpel, among others.

14) Tell me how you feel - Jon Kennedy 64:51
Coincidentally, while pulling this show together, I was reading China Mieville's "Kraken", which had me thinking about resistance when faced with the possible end of all things. Nothing, you'd think, would be so horrific in real life as in Mieville's imagined London end-times; nonetheless, resistance would always seem hard, compared to whatever discomfort we're used to. And yet. Your existence, your freedom, your resistance. Make it worth it.
Shining a light along the way will be Jon Kennedy, Charles Webster, Andreya Triana, Bonobo, Freedom Satellite, Gelka, 351 Lake Shore Drive, Maya Jane Coles and more.
Best to you in the New Year, everyone: Shine a light of your own.

Blue Christmas is for the family folk, the lonely, the travelers, the stay-at-homes, the faithful, and the ones who just want to have fun. It is, in fact, like a festive box of chocolates tied up with a luminous blue bow.
Hat-tip to NoiseTrade – their recommendations for new talent are always worth looking into, especially when you yearn to hear some original seasonal songs along with your standards. Listen for Josh Garrels, Zaac Pick, Sleeping at Last, Over the Rhine, and Brooke Annibale among the new voices, while Sarah McLachlan, Mary J. Blige, and Etta James ground you in the familiar.

Sometimes, life offers you a change in direction or intention that feels more like a fracturing. There will be no specifics offered for healing this fracture; there will be only accepting change and keeping on going. And remembering, in the words of Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."
You gotta deal. Assistance is provided here by Nils Frahm, Andy Cato, Art of Noise, Tom Roberts, Anthome, Users Atmosphere, and more.

13) Bon Iver - Holocene 54:19
Bon Iver's Holocene has to have been one of the more enthusiastically-played sounds of the past decade and it's tricky to want to use a track which, while it is certainly very good, is still something that most mainstream music listeners are tired of hearing, even five years on. So in essence, I have to create a safe space for this track, where -- when it finally drops -- it is an absolute treat to hear, refreshing as a glass of cold water after a bowl of oatmeal. Because, make no mistake, Holocene is a good song and a relentless earworm to boot.
The changelings helping us get to Holocene’s moment in this mix include Jetty, FKA twigs, Jonn Serrie, All India Radio, Jan Garbarek, Brian Eno and more.
Just one metamorphosis among many which might reshape our immediate futures.

For about 6 years now, I've been going back to my hometown for my annual vacation, reconnecting with the folks I spent 'my formative years' with. It was a trip that acquired some urgency when one of the group fell ill, but this year everyone's in generally good shape. One friend arranged opportunities for me to consume some culture, as well as just hang out. That, together with an hour or two we spent in a Memory Lane session, reminded me of all the good reasons I miss my roots ... while not missing the traffic or the freezing winters, of course.
Tracks from Omni Trio, Gary B, TJ Rehmi, Soulstance, All India Radio, Rollercone, Emancipator, plus a new tune from Irresistible Force ft. Nik Turner & Youth, come together for another Alternative Downtempo and Memory Lounge session.
