After I was reminded of this year's SXSW get-together and listened to the 100 songs posted online by NPR to celebrate it, I looked for prior years' collections and found 2014-2017 were still available, which was all the encouragement I needed to add a few more sets focused on this annual event as companions to the original "Years of Cool" set. Selections from this huge amount of material fell into three loosely-themed sets, based around the vibes of longing, love and liberty. This is the LIBERTY set.
Liberty in this context is about your right to grapple with your own life and wrestle it into whatever shape you are strong enough to produce: thus the prevalence of get-a-grip lyrics in this session (also some NSFW hip-hop taking us to the edge.)
Fine work here, full of tough love and optimism -- but this is just 16 out of 400 tracks, which I encourage you to check out for yourselves.

Just like longing, LOVE has some range also: happy, sad, dubious, looking forward, looking back ... So much poetry, so many songs are about love in some way, right?
Great tunes here which cover just about all that range, but this is just 15 out of 400 tracks, which I encourage you to check out for yourselves.

Selections from this huge amount of material fell into three loosely-themed sets, based around the vibes of longing, love and liberty. This is the LONGING set.
“Loneliness” was the original concept, but that’s really just about other human/animal companionship, whereas you could be LONGING for so many things, including company, but also money, culture, respect, political stability, an economy that finds a niche for every willing participant.... You get me.
Great work here from Adam Torres and Christopher Paul Stelling in particular, but this is just 14 out of 400 tracks, which I encourage you to check out for yourselves.

According to Google, the Austin TX SXSW festival was first fielded in 1987, which by now equals 30 years of cool, making it older than many of the attendees. At some point, NPR (& SPIN in 2011) started making available 100 songs by artists who performed each year; I heard about that bounty in 2009, and occasionally downloaded the SXSW100, but never crafted a set out of those tunes, so I’m correcting that oversight now.
Out of 3 years’ worth of music (2011, 13 & 18), I selected 22 tracks that give an idea of what attendees (and of course, NPR listeners) could hear. (Each 100 also included some hard rock/shredding for those who would seek it out, but none of that made the cut here.) Except for Julianna Barwick, there wasn’t an artist I'd heard before, which is odd b/c it’s an impressive bunch ... oh & btw, where else but SXSW could you expect to hear a pop tune based on the legend of Orpheus & Eurydice?

Depending on where you live, you may already be shaking winter off, or you may simply still be dreaming of the day to come when you'll finally be able to bid the cold goodbye. If you're still encircled by ice, then some vigorous physical movements might help to warm you up; if your landscape is already greening, then the mood to dance has no doubt already overtaken you. Either way, you should find some tunes here to assist & encourage you....
This session got its start when I fondly remembered a 1991 release from This Mortal Coil, and wondered what had been released in the years since, that mined that same sensibility...I found more like it in releases from Djebali, Karl Axel Dissler, and Taban Hayes, which in turn led me to Sweet Velvet, Dust Motes, Silent Poets and more.

In response to requests from the listener base, I've pulled together a couple of jazz-oriented sessions that, so far, seem to tend toward slow-cooker style. This series will drop under the title Eveningtime; this is Vol. II.
Eveningtime here refers to that bit of relaxed atmosphere you may find between the end of the work-day and the moment you head off to bed. You may be having dinner, or a cocktail, you may be hanging out in the kitchen or relaxing on the sofa, in the house or out on the porch ... there's no rule or routine; Hell, you could have the show on low in the background at work ... it's just whatever offers the opportunity for that chill-out moment you crave.
The predominant flavors in this rich and tasty jazz concoction come from the recent work of Matthew Halsall; added to that are tracks from Liz Story, Art Pepper, Mark Isham & Art Lande, Andy Bey, Frank Morgan, The Warheads, Bill Evans and more.

12) The Weeknd X Ember Island - Can't Feel My Face (Jaeriah Remix) 58:45
13) Little Indian - City of Treasures 61:46
There’s no underlying theme here, no message, just a feeling found thru a process of fitting-in & clicking-together, creating unity like a mosaic. The actual magic is worked by a number of tracks offered via the XLR8R downloads page (the generosity of which--including the artists' permissions--should be celebrated), and includes yet another remix of the Weeknd's Can't Feel My Face. Add to this, selections from old favorites like Lemongrass, Poldoore, The Orchid, United Future Organization & Jah Wobble, and you have a downtempo treat. It’s not easy to find much info online about the last group, Little Indian, but their lyrics offer that bit of uplift that makes hanging on to the end worthwhile.

One year into it, proud Babylon struts, unashamed & uncaring, fully itself now in the spotlite, while resistance arises in every corner -- good careful people along with the hot-headed overthrowers. Be strong, they counsel: have faith in the promise of change, and if the change you first choose does not serve you well, then choose again. Don't fall into the temptation to lose your inspiration: press on, press on.
As always, I bring reinforcements, roots music to stir your soul and strengthen your resolve, with emboldening assistance from the originals & remixes of the multitudinous Dubmatix crew, classic tunes from Bob Marley, Thievery Corp., Delroy Wilson & Lucky Dube, plus new contenders from Megative & Alpha Steppa.
For this first session of 2018, we are chanting down Babylon ... be inspired; never give up.

Elevation offers 70 minutes of jazz & jazz-influenced music, starting out mild & thoughtful but rising to a greater energy level over the course of the session, all with the purpose of taking you to a higher plane. The wind beneath your wings on this upward journey comes courtesy of Nostalgia 77, Liz Story, Joshua Redman, Digby Jones, Nils Petter Molvaer, the Jack DeJohnette/Matt Garrison/Ravi Coltrane Trio and more.
A personal note about that Digby Jones track, which I first heard on 2001's Café del Mar Vol. 8 shortly after it was released, and which I think has held up remarkably well for a 'cocktail lounge' piece. Until that moment, most of the electronica I'd been consuming as part of my musical explorations was House, but because I'd gotten here via the 'world music' path, I was looking for something a little less 4/4, which I found in downtempo; Pina Colada was the door into a world that became my favorite place to be.
